IARU Members


Australian National University

Founded in 1946, the Australian National University (ANU) is well-established among its peers for academic excellence with its seven colleges and the Institute of Advanced Studies comprising nine research schools and a research centre. As an active Alliance participant, ANU is the lead for the signature Campus Sustainability Program as well as a dedicated collaborator in other research initiatives such as the Demonstrative Project on Sustainable Cities, Global Culture and Citizenship, and Regional Perspectives on Global Security. With its diverse research capabilities, the ANU has a fine tradition of innovation in research that underpins its involvement in the Alliance.


ETH Zurich

Founded in 1855, the ETH Zurich belongs to the top universities for science and technology as well as a recognized world leader in cutting edge technological innovation. Leveraging on its competencies, ETH Zurich hosts the IARU's website and provides thought leadership on Open Cast/Open Access publishing. It also plays an active role in many institutional activities of the Alliance which are exemplary of ETH Zurich's commitment to education and research. As a leading university, ETH Zurich symbolizes excellence in education and inspiration in research that guides its participation in the Alliance.


National University of Singapore

Founded in 1905, the National University of Singapore (NUS) is Singapore's flagship university which offers a global approach to education and research, with a focus on Asian perspectives and expertise. Its holistic educational approach is supported by its dedication to strategic research in key areas such as engineering, life sciences and biomedicine, social sciences and natural sciences. NUS' cosmopolitan community of students from over 100 countries further provides a diverse social and cultural educational experience. As a globally-oriented institution that strives towards the nurturing of an innovative community amongst students, NUS is an active partner in numerous activities, particularly the Global Summer Program and the Global Internship Program. NUS also spearheads discussions in areas such as global education and the value of research intensive universities. NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan is the incumbent IARU Chairman.


Peking University

Founded in 1898, Peking University (Beida) is a teaching and research university which embraces diversity ranging from the study of sciences to humanities to management. The commitment to intellectual freedom of thought has positioned Beida as a progressive center that has produced many modern Chinese thinkers and as an influential actor in the modernization of China. The tradition of intellectual inquiry underlying the transformation of Beida over time provides valuable lessons for collaborative initiatives ranging from sustainability to institutional practices for the Alliance.


The University of Tokyo

Founded in 1877, the University of Tokyo (Todai) is a prestigious leading university that provides a full spectrum of academic activities which allows students to develop intellectual depth while acquiring professional skills. It has been a supportive collaborator in various IARU initiatives such as the Global Security and Sustainable Cities research projects. The spirit of perseverance towards the creation of a global research and education network distinguishes Todai from its peers. With its belief in the value of providing a varied academic environment, Todai brings an inherent richness of culture in its engagement with the Alliance.


University of California, Berkeley

Founded in 1868, the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) is a premier public university that prides itself as a wellspring of innovation. With its 130 academic departments and more than 80 inter-disciplinary research units divided into 14 colleges and schools, UC Berkeley provides a diverse and enriching environment for education and research. As a participant in numerous IARU initiatives such as the Global Summer Program, Campus Sustainability and Sustainability Fellowships, UC Berkeley shares its philosophy of learning and innovation through its engagement with the Alliance.


University of Cambridge

Founded in 1209, the University of Cambridge is one of the oldest universities in the world and a widely respected academic centre in the forefront of excellence. With its longstanding history in the pursuit of academic distinction, Cambridge actively leads the IARU benchmarking initiatives and enthusiastically participates in other key initiatives such as Industrial Innovation, Alumni Associations and Integrated Services. As a steadfast believer in the freedom of thought and the questioning spirit, Cambridge's involvement with the Alliance bears testimony to its commitment to the furtherance of society through the pursuit of education and research at the highest international levels of excellence.


University of Copenhagen

Founded in 1479, the University of Copenhagen (KU) is a leading European University that is distinguished for its diversity in academic environment and scientific approaches. With its specialized focus on sustainability issues, KU is a keen participant in IARU initiatives pertaining to ageing, longevity and health, and climate changes. It has also led and organized a successful IARU Climate Change Congress in conjunction with COP-15, which further underscores its commitment to be a leading international climate university. Given its encouragement of diversity and excellence in research, KU brings a spirit of intellectual engagement in its interaction with the Alliance.


University of Oxford

Founded in 1096 (est.), the University of Oxford has the accolade of being the first University in the English-speaking world with an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research. Its culture of close academic supervision and the academic communities fostered by its colleges have inspired many students. Oxford has played a key role in shaping the strategic direction for IARU and has been active in establishing innovative programs such as the Global Summer Program and the Global Internship Program (with NUS). With its tradition of contributing to humanity through education, Oxford is an inspiring collaborator for the Alliance.


Yale University

Founded in 1701, Yale University is located in New Haven, Connecticut (USA), and consists of: Yale College, the four-year undergraduate school; the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences; and the professional schools (Architecture, Art, Divinity, Drama, Engineering and Applied Science, Forestry and Environmental Studies, Law, Management, Medicine, Music, Nursing, and Public Health). Among Yale's 11,500 students, there are more than 1,900 international students (16%) from 110 different countries. International students in any of the 59 Ph.D. programs in the Arts and Sciences pay no tuition and receive a generous annual stipend. Yale's 3,200 faculty are conducting over 900 international research projects.
